The French composer and pianist Rita Strohl (1865–1941) is little known today, but in recent years her music has gained renewed attention. In her own time, she was highly respected and wrote chamber music, symphonic and lyrical works, as well as numerous songs.

When cellist Sandra Lied Haga discovered Strohl’s grand cello sonata by chance in 2019, she was immediately captivated. The work, inspired by the story of Titus and Bérénice, is both romantic and dramatic – and a major challenge to perform, as it explores the full range of the cello.

Haga will also perform songs by the German composer Clara Schumann (1819–1896) and a piece by Fanny Mendelssohn (1805–1847), which has never before been performed in Norway.

Sandra Lied Haga (b. 1994) is one of Norway’s most prominent young cellists. She has won several national and international competitions and made her debut at Wigmore Hall in London at the age of just twelve.

Thank you to The Ford Jebsen Collection for supporting the music programme accompanying the exhibition.
