Agathe Backer Grøndahl (1847–1907) was a Norwegian pianist and is regarded as Norway’s first significant female composer. She composed 250 songs and is considered one of the foremost composers of this genre in Norway. In addition, she wrote 150 piano pieces as well as works for choir and orchestra. She developed her own distinctive artistic voice, rooted in the European Romantic tradition.

Pauline Hall (1890–1969) is regarded as Norway’s most significant female composer after Agathe Backer Grøndahl, and was for many years a central figure in Norwegian musical life – both as a music critic and as long-standing chair of Ny Musikk (the Norwegian section of the ISCM). As a composer, Hall’s style evolved from the late-Romantic tradition through impressionistic soundscapes of the 1920s, to a more neoclassical idiom following her stay in Berlin.

This evening, her music will be interpreted by Julie Yuqing Ye (b. 1992), an Oslo-based pianist known for her versatility as both soloist and chamber musician. Ye has performed at venues such as the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, Oslo Concert Hall, MUNCH, and the University Aula, as well as Wigmore Hall, Draper’s Hall, and Milton Court Concert Hall in London.
