Italienerinnen (Italian Woman),1895

In Paris, Tønnesen created a bust of a young girl. The model was reportedly a 16-year-old Italian girl. The combination of rough and smooth surfaces was considered modern and represented a break with late classicism. This bust became one of Tønnesen’s most sought-after works, and at least three versions in marble are known to exist.
