Vigeland Park / Other sculptures
A few sculptures located outside the main axis of Vigeland Park were installed after Gustav Vigeland's death.
Outside the park’s main axis, one can find Boy and Girl (1939), installed in 1955, and Girl and Lizard (1938), installed in 1959.
At the end of a transverse axis to the north stands the colossal bronze group The Family (1934–36), which is Vigeland’s largest sculpture after The Monolith. It consists of 21 figures, assembled in smaller groups that merge into one another. The central theme is people of different ages protecting each other from a looming threat. The original plaster model was kept at the Vigeland Museum until a donation from IBM made it possible to cast and install the sculpture in the park in 1988.
Gustav Vigeland’s Self-Portrait (1942), located just inside the park’s main entrance, was funded by Fritt Ord and erected in 1993. That same year, Triangle (1939–40) was also installed, funded by Eiendomsspar AS.
In 2002, the last sculpture, Surprised (1942), was installed in the park, funded by Kistefos AS.
